I had a long comic book discussion with Shawn and Mark when we had a free moment at BrickCon this year (up in Seattle if anyone ever reads this) and they were just singing the praises of Robert Kirkman’s Invincible (Image Comics). I had become somewhat enamorred with the DC Universe so I wasn’t just rushing to look at anything else, but Mark bought me the first trade (I should be indifferent more often, I get a lot of free stuff that way) and I loved it.
I’ve since almost caught up with the trades to where I can get to buying issues every week (#58 comes out this week). Some people only read trades and some people rip stuff off the internet but I love love love actually going to the store every wednesday and buying my stack of books.
There’s just something fun about the whole collecting process for me. Anyways, back on topic. the book itself just seems to be fresh in spite of the fact that it draws heavily in a lot of places from the common comic book archetypes. Kirkman has fun with the process while still allowing his stories to take themselves seriously.

I still haven’t read Watchmen, if you can believe it. Maybe if I hold out a little longer, someone will give me a free copy…

lol, if it comes down to that Andrew I’ll bring a copy with me when I come to Seattle this year. Hopefully the movie will be a good representation. I didn’t like the V for Vendetta translation though, so my fears are pretty big with this one.

Excellent, glad you’re enjoying it. Invincible is really great.
Once you get all caught up on that, you should read Kirkman’s other title, The Walking Dead. About zombies, of course.

I can’t get trades in the UK of anything other than Marvel, DC and 2000AD. I used to love picking up my stack of books though before Lego funds took over. I may have to get back into comics.

Invincible is really good, so is The Walking Dead, also by Kirkman.
I actually could have a lot of recommendations on comics I like, if you want a list.
by the way, this is Drew from bellevue LBR.

I’m also a big fan of Invincible most of Robert Kirkman’s stuff is awesome. If you haven’t already checked out the Walking Dead I highly suggest it as I think its his best work so far.

@Dover – I’m a pretty big DC head at the moment so I have lots of comic enthusiasm as well. Invincible is just my main foray out of the DC universe. I used to only focus on Marvel, but went into a comic dark age and when I came back I found Marvel significantly less interesting for some reason. Geoff Johns Green Lantern is what brought me back into comics.
@Aaron – I’ve heard great things about walking dead as well and am thinking about checking it out.
@Monk – um…that sucks, are there no good online services for you in the UK either that spread out more than the big 2?

You can read the first 90 pages of Invincible here: http://www.hiddenrobot.com/IDAILY/idaily1.html
This is the contents of the first Trade Paperback.
Also, FYI, there are a few URLs that are bad as you’re reading along. If you get an error page, check the URL to make sure it says “idaily”.

I may be able to pick up the novels every couple of months from W.H.Smith or something. There used to be a guy I knew who had a market stall which stocked everything but the demand for comics where I live isn’t that great, so he had to stop. I’ll have to do some shopping around.

bummer, you come from a strange backward land it seems. I pray your country re-arranges its priorities.

Oh well! Ryan Ottley has a deviantArt gallery though: http://wya.deviantart.com/gallery/
So between that, and the online issues I should be able to get my fix.
